Personal: Gordon is a native Californian, raised in Pasadena and a graduate of Pasadena High School. In college at San Jose State, he was a member of the Tutorials in Letters and Sciences integrated classics program, a Learning Community founded by Mervyn Cadwallader and John Sperling. After the Tutorials experiment at Monte Capanno, Gordon graduated from San Jose State (1972) with majors in political science and from the New College of San Jose State. In 1970, after returning from study and travel in Europe, in Studio City, CA, Gordon married the former Linda Green, daughter of Esther Green (now Gertzman) of Los Angeles. They made their first homes in the downtown district of San Jose, and Gordon worked for Santa Clara County as a youth recreation leader on the east side of San Jose. From 1972 to 1977, Gordon and Linda lived in Santa Barbara, where he completed a Ph.D. at the University of California. The family left California after the passage of Proposition 13 (1978); their two daughters, Jennifer and LK, were raised in Oregon, Missouri and Virginia. Since 1983, the Bowens have made their home in Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Jennifer and LK each graduated from the Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. The family enjoys frequent trips across America and back to California.
Interests, Hobbies: Gordon enjoys activities built around physical fitness: hiking, waterfall visiting (both in California and in Virginia), weight lifting, running, etc. (Long a tennis player with Linda, injuries in the 1990s forced them to put their rackets down.) Travel in the American Southwest (especially Arizona), and Northern Mexico has been frequent since leaving California in the late 1970s; and when in California, favorite places are Orange County and its sunny beaches, and the Central Coast near Morro Bay. He also loves L.A., with special affection reserved for the West side/Fairfax District. Gordon loves to dance, and with Linda they visit clubs and galas in Virginia and elsewhere in the U.S., especially in Southern California. Since 1996, he also has developed and maintained websites as a hobby, including the one of this Monte Capanno community, as well as two separate websites at his college, one for instruction in his courses, and one for his academic department.
